WHO IS THE OTHER PERSON AT THE DENTIST?

When you come to the dentist for a checkup or for dental treatment you are there to see me - the dentist - but there is always someone else in the room - the Dental Assistant.

The Dental Assistant or Dental Nurse plays a very important role in assisting not only the dentist but also the patient during an appointment. They are not there just to attack you with the suction during your appointment.

We have 2 Dental Assistants at Clubb Dental who keep the place going every day, what are they doing?

WHAT DOES A DENTAL ASSISTANT DO?

Dental Assistants help dentists by making sure that everything needed is at hand to make your appointment go smoothly and maybe even faster.

Dental Assistants help the patient making sure that you are as comfortable as possible during any treatment, while I am concentrating on the best treatment outcomes the dental assistant is concentrating on your comfort.

Dental Assistant also have many responsibilities:

Preparing items needed for dental treatment
Assisting during dental procedures
Sterilizing Instruments and Equipment
Develop x-rays
Pouring Impressions
Perform suctioning during procedure and passing instruments as required
Maintain dental records
Cleaning up after the procedure
Help patients feel comfortable
Provide patients with instructions for post care after a procedure
Ordering Dental Supplies
Dental reception duties as well such as answering the phone and making appointments
Help dentist manage any medical emergencies
And anything else I have forgotten to list here that I will get into trouble for later. 🤣

HOW DO YOU BECOME A DENTAL ASSISTANT?

Dental Assistants have a TAFE certification in Dental Assisting Certificate III or IV.

This knowledge is then built on further with on the job training.

They continue to update their knowledge with the latest infection control guideline trainings as well as other Continuing Professional Development courses.

LUCY
Lucy has been a Dental Assistant for almost 3 years and can usually be found assisting Dr Steven. She is a local and has worked at a few practices across Brisbane before joining us.

BROOKE
Brooke has been a Dental Assistant for 3 years and is usually assisting Dr Tijana. She has been a dental assistant in Perth WA as well as here in Brisbane.
