Think back to your teen years. Did you have braces? How many of your friends had braces?
Many adults who didn't have braces as a teen, or whose teeth have become misaligned, are opting to fix their smile later in life. But what if you don't want metal brackets in your mouth? Clear aligners are an alternative option that will turn a crooked smile straight, but are they the right choice for you?
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRACES & ALIGNERS
BRACES - Uses brackets that are attached directly to the teeth. The brackets can be made of metal or clear plastic. Attached to the brackets are wires and rubber bands that push and pull the teeth into a straighter alignment.
ALIGNERS - Are a series of plastic moulds that are custom made to fit your teeth. Each set of aligners move your teeth step by step into their final straighter position. Small white attachments are sometimes placed on your teeth to help the aligner get a better grip on the tooth, to help move it.
ADVANTAGES OF ALIGNERS
Aligners are almost clear and so you can wear them without others noticing that you are having orthodontics.
Your aligners are removable which allows for easy and thorough cleaning of teeth.
We can even monitor your aligner progress remotely without needing to come into the practice for every appointment which saves a significant amount of your time.
DISADVANTAGES OF ALIGNERS
Aligners need to be worn for 22 hours a day. If they are not worn enough, then the results will not be possible or will be slower. This means that the final result depends on you wearing them!
Aligners need to be removed to eat and drink which can be embarrassing at times.
ADVANTAGES OF BRACES
Braces are attached so you do not have to remember to put them in, they are working all the time.
For more complex cases only braces can get the desired results. Clear braces and white ceramic braces are less noticeable to others
DISADVANTAGES OF BRACES
The wire and brackets are noticeable to others
Braces an be difficult to clean around and require specialised floss to be able to floss your teeth.
Your lip and cheek can be damaged by the braces and wire.
