DIY teeth whitening kits is equivalent to dyeing your own hair!
Using DIY teeth whitening kits is equivalent to dyeing your own hair.
Sometimes the results can be fine but...
We all know someone (or it has happened to you) who has dyed their own hair and it has ended in disaster.
They then needed to tie their hair up in a bun until a professional could fix the mess that they had created.
The same can be said for DIY teeth whitening kits that are being sold all over the internet at the moment.

Dyeing your own Hair

Many people have dyed their hair at home and the results have come out fine, but lets face it when you do go to the hairdresser the results are fabulous!
There are many problems that can occur when dyeing your hair at home:

* The colour may not be even over your hair
* The colour choice may be totally inappropriate for you
* The colour may not have turned out like the box or like you thought would happen
* The application may have left stains around your hairline and on your face
* Your hair can be left brittle or damaged from the chemicals used

DIY Teeth Whitening

Just like dyeing your own hair similar problems can occur when using DIY teeth whitening kits.
Also when you go to the dentist the results are fabulous!

There are many problems that can occur when using DIY teeth whitening kits:

* Some teeth cannot be whitened such as crowns
* The teeth are not uniformly whitened
* The teeth colour you are after may not be possible
* The chemicals used in teeth whitening can leave gums irritated
* Long term damage can occur to your teeth
DIY teeth whitening kits are best avoided

Professional Teeth Whitening vs DIY teeth whitening

Lets look at the problems with DIY whitening kits and how they are improved or avoided using Professional teeth whitening.
Some teeth cannot be whitened
Teeth that have been treated with a crown will not change colour during teeth whitening. The crown is made of ceramic and at the time that it was placed a decision would have been made to match the crown to your existing teeth colour. If you whiten your teeth now they will not match anymore.
Other problems can be a tooth where the nerve has died leaving a grey or black tooth, this cannot be whitened using teeth whitening methods (It can often be improved by treating the tooth in a different way)

The teeth are not uniformly white
Whitening gels are held onto your teeth using a tray similar to a mouthguard while you are having teeth whitening done.
Dentists create custom made whitening tray that fit your mouth and put an even amount of whitening gel on each tooth so that the overall look is uniform.
DIY kits do not use custom made whitening trays so where ever the gel sits will give the most whitening and overall not a uniform look.
Custom made whitening trays available at Clubb Dental
The teeth colour you are after may not be possible
In chair teeth whitening such as Zoom! can make your smile upto 8 shades whiter in 1 hour.
Professional take home whitening gels using custom made trays whiten your teeth upto 6 shades.
As a dentist we can assess your teeth and let you know what can be expected when whitening your teeth.
DIY teeth whitening uses different/weaker bleaches when whitening your teeth so the results will not be as dramatic and definately not as white.

The chemicals used can irritate gums
Bleaches are used to whiten your teeth during any form of teeth whitening. Your gums are too sensitive to have these bleaches on them. During Professional teeth whitening the gums are protected and custom trays are made so that the gel will not be sitting on the gums. Irritated gums can develop ulcers and can be painful stopping you from further teeth whitening treatments.

Long Term Damage can occur to your teeth
Purchasing DIY bleaching kits can be especially dangerous for the long term health of your teeth. Even if the price is great do not buy teeth whitening kits that have NOT been approval in Australia as they have not been tested to be safe for your teeth and can cause long term damage.
Those few dollars saved now might really cost you later!
