I am always amazed at the number of people I see taking to the sporting field each week, who are not wearing a mouthguard.
"About 1/3 of all dental injuries that we see could have been prevented by wearing a mouthguard and around 70% of those dental injuries are to people under 25 years old so it is especially important for children to wear them"
Dental injuries can be painful, disfiguring and expensive to treat. They can result in time off from work or school to recover and lengthy (expensive) dental treatments
Common dental injuries include:
Cut Lips
Cut Gum
Cut Cheeks
Cuts to the tongue or face
Chipped Teeth
Broken Teeth
Knocked Out Teeth
Broken Jaw
These dental injuries can be caused during a game or even during training.
If you play a sport where there is a risk of collision or contact to the face then you should definitely be wearing a mouthguard at these times. Sports such as Rugby League, Rugby Union, Hockey, AFL and boxing are a no brainer.
Some other sports that we usually consider as non-contact sports can also have a risk of a collision and so a mouthguard should be considered. These sports can include cricket, soccer, basketball, netball and touch football. More and more professionals in these sports are starting to see the advantages of wearing mouthguards especially during rougher games.

The cost of an injury to your teeth or jaw far exceeds the cost of a custom mouthguard.

WHAT MOUTHGUARD SHOULD I GET?

There are 3 types of Mouthguards available:
CUSTOM MOUTHGUARDS
They provide the best protection as they have the best fit to your mouth, because they fit to your mouth they are comfortable to wear and provide the best cushioning from any impact. They are the most expensive option, but any injury to your teeth will far exceed the cost of the mouthguard.
BOIL & BITE MOUTHGUARD
These mouthguards do not conform to a person's mouth and do not provide the best protection from impacts and can be uncomfortable to wear. These mouthguards are better than wearing no mouthguard at all.
STOCK MOUTHGUARDS
These ready to wear mouthguards are already moulded so they will be poorly fitted and so will be uncomfortable to wear and will offer the least protection from any impact.
A custom mouthguard is the most important piece of sporting equipment.
Make sure you wear it at all times, playing a game or at training.

A dentist should check your mouthguard every 12 months to check the fit of the mouthguard,
and to make sure it is still in good condition.

To take care of your mouthguard you should clean it after each use with a small amount of toothpaste.
Allow it to airdry and store in a cool place in a well ventilated container.

Do not keep your mouthguard in the car. The heat of the car will affect the fit of your mouthguard over time.

Replace your child's mouthguard every 12 to 18 months as their mouths are growing and changing and a new mouthguard will ensure the best fit for the next sporting season.

Custom Mouthguards can be made with allowances for braces or for growing teeth.
