Custom made mouthguards require very little maintenance but a few tips will ensure it is fresh and clean for every game.
HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR MOUTHGUARD
At a miminum you should rinse your mouthguard with fresh water after each use and allow it to air dry.
Every week you should use a toothbrush and toothpaste or some soap to scrub your mouthguard to prevent the growth of bacteria or fungus, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
For a deeper clean you can soak your mouthguard in alcohol free mouthwash or use a denture cleaning tablet such as Polident.
Keep you mouthguard in a cool, dry place and in it's protective case when not in use.
Do not keep your mouthguard in the car as the heat or direct sun-light can affect it's fit.
Do not chew on your mouthguard as it can cause small tears or holes that will affect the protection that it provides. Keep your mouthguard away from your pets - they love to chew on them.
Check your mouthguard every week when you are cleaning it for any damage

WHEN YOU SHOULD REPLACE YOUR MOUTHGUARD
Your mouthguard should be comfortable to wear, if it is not comfortable, look at replacing it.
If you see any damage to your mouthguard or tears or cracks - it is time to get a new mouthguard.
Mouthguards need to be replaced if your have any restorative dental treatment of your have had any tooth loss.
Children's mouths are changing all the time as they lose teeth and new teeth come through. Children often need a new mouthguard every 12 months, even if the mouthguard is not looking damaged.
